What’s new at the IETF?

The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) works on developing the voluntary standards that underpin the global Internet. These standards often influence operational practices, network architecture, and protocol evolution across the ecosystem. This session will highlight some key developments at the IETF, including new standards proposals, newly chartered working groups, and hot topics gaining traction within the IETF community. Special attention will be given to areas of direct relevance to ne…

Are NTP Clients Always Right?
Shreyas Konjerla, TU Delft

The Network Time Protocol (NTP) is the primary synchronization protocol for billions of devices. Although attacks on NTP servers have been well studied, attacks on NTP clients are less well understood. In this thesis, we scrutinize the 8 NTP clients across 3 Operating systems and test their resilience against attackers and malicious public time servers. We test all the clients against time manipulation, or time-shift attacks and exploit NTP protocol features to induce a denial-of-service for th…

Serban Orza

My team and I (made up of 2nd year students at TU Delft) have developed a tool allowing users to measure the accuracy of NTP servers, receiving data such as offset, round-trip time, precision, stratum etc., as well as being able to see historical data of the server and compare multiple servers. The application also integrates the RIPE Atlas API to measure the NTP server from probes close to the user. We would like to present the research we've done into these topics, including mapping a domain …
