The BGP Clock and the BGP Observatory: Hunting Stuck Routes

At RIPE 89 we attempted to study and quantify the impact of stuck BGP routes across the Internet. We proposed a new method that allowed for better understanding of the situation, and it allowed pattern studying over longer time periods.

This year we return with an even better, the new BGP Clock, as well as an automated tool that analyzes the results within minutes.

Getting 1+ Tbps from an x86 server
Branimir Rajtar, 5x9 Networks

We present how a virtual Broadband Network Gateway surpassed 1 Tbps on a single commodity server. By combining a control-and-user-plane separation with careful datapath tuning and continuous performance profiling, throughput grew seven-fold—from 160 Gbps to 1.2 Tbps—without specialised hardware. The talk outlines the optimisation waves, explains why shifting from many small virtual machines to one large instance unlocks efficiency, and distils practical lessons for operators seeking carrier-sca…

PON in the Datacenter: Hyperscale for Management and Console
Mike Joseph, Meta

We share our novel approach to datacenter management connectivity using Passive Optical Network (PON) technology. Traditionally used in residential and SMB ISP access, PON offers flexibility, scale, and efficiency benefits for management and console services in Meta's hyperscale datacenters.

This talk explores the rationale behind adopting PON, includes a brief overview of its fundamentals, and dives into Meta's implementation. We also discuss how we manage the whole system using our automati…
