Abstract

We present how a virtual Broadband Network Gateway surpassed 1 Tbps on a single commodity server. By combining a control-and-user-plane separation with careful datapath tuning and continuous performance profiling, throughput grew seven-fold—from 160 Gbps to 1.2 Tbps—without specialised hardware. The talk outlines the optimisation waves, explains why shifting from many small virtual machines to one large instance unlocks efficiency, and distils practical lessons for operators seeking carrier-scale capacity while keeping costs and power per gigabit low.
